Leadbeater's Possum Projects
The Leadbeater’s Possum was listed as Critically Endangered under the EPBC Act (1999) in 2015 due to concerns about a lack of future habitat.
There are currently a number of projects underway to help ensure the long-term survival of the species.
The Victorian Government has made $11 million available to support different programs aimed at helping the Possum’s population recover with a number of organisations including VicForests involved in this work.
These programs include various ways to protect the habitat for Leadbeater’s Possum such as the 70% of area the Leadbeater's Possum lives in protected in formal national parks and conservation reserves or areas excluded from timber harvesting, targeted surveys looking for and protecting for Leadbeater's Possum habitat from timber harvesting operations and Regrowth Retention Harvesting.
