Bushfire is a significant threat to Victorians and our forests, and we are committed to the suppression of fires to protect communities, assets and environmental and cultural values.
Using our forestry expertise and skills, equipment, and technical and local knowledge we contribute to the Victorian Government’s bushfire management, response and recovery across the State.
We are part of Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) along with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water. We also work alongside the County Fire Authority (CFA), other emergency services and local communities’ year-round to protect people, property, and our iconic landscapes.
Our staff have a broad range of fire roles and expertise including operational firefighting, incident management and support roles such as logistics and information, and plant and aircraft support.
Additionally, our contractors often provide equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, and skidders to support fire-fighting efforts across the State.
Our staff and contractors also support DELWP with fuel reduction burns throughout the year to help reduce the risk of bushfires spreading out of containable areas.
As well as contributing to bushfire suppression and recovery, we also assist in the removal of fallen timber from road clearing and other community fire protection activities at the direction of FFMVic.
VicForests has contributed our significant store of seed to forest regeneration programs in fire affected forests and assisted DELWP in its delivery following the 2019–2020 bushfires.
We also worked with DELWP to collect additional seed to complement existing stocks and support forest recovery.
Our extensive seed bank of Victorian native tree species was used to plant or sow appropriate areas to promote forest recovery with the appropriate species types.
This seed has been used to treat and regenerate 11,000 hectares of young ash forest that were too young to carry a seed crop and self-regenerate.
We have bolstered our seed collection program to replenish our stocks for our regeneration work and prepare for the potential future events.
